Yellow - Tailed Black Cockatoo

Often seen as a portent of inclement weather, the yellow-tailed black cockatoo is a regular sight in northern Tasmania. Maybe that says something about the weather here! When flying low overhead in small groups of 4-6, it’s always a special sight to see those huge wings seemingly defy gravity, as they slowly bob across the sky in search of nuts, pinecones or grubs. This particular cockatoo was captured flying towards a pine tree laden with cones in our paddock. If their mournful cry didn’t alert us to their presence, the almighty thud of a dropped pinecone on our roof certainly would!
