Separate Prison Chapel Window

The Separate Prison at the Port Arthur historic site was part of a new experiment in criminal reform. Instead of using physical violence to punish prisoners, isolation and silence were used to break the prisoner’s spirits. Part of the prisoner’s life involved religious services in the Separate Prison Chapel. I took this photo from outside the Chapel showing the window which stands above the pulpit. This is possibly the only piece of aesthetically designed architecture the prisoners saw in their daily lives and I feel like this gives the image a special poignancy.
