Oak Leaves
The Port Arthur historic site has a strong and unique atmosphere. Walking through the site, it almost feels like you’ve been transported back in time. As there is no regular traffic on the roads connecting the various buildings, an almost surreal feeling of quiet pervades the area. When the site was originally founded, the homesick managers established English-style gardens and trees as a kind of oasis from what they perceived as harsh, native bush. Now, these tall stands of majestic oaks and their carpets of autumn foliage enhance the strange feeling of an English settlement grafted on to the Tasmanian landscape.
