Prison Cell Window

The Port Arthur site was founded as a shipbuilding and penal colony in 1830. It was relatively modern by the day’s standards and tried to reduce repeat offending by teaching prisoners a trade and disciplining inmates with psychological deterrents rather than brute force alone. It was also thought that by removing small-scale offenders from their native environments (mostly England and Ireland), it could reduce the potential of a life of crime. A lot of the site is still intact today and it makes a great place to explore this chapter of Tasmania’s history.
